Linda Bistricic

Linda has a Bachelor degree in Interior Design from RMIT, Melbourne, having worked with the iconic Bates Smart, the largest Architecture and Interior Design firm in Australia, on many high profile commercial interior design projects before starting a career in teaching.

Linda has over twenty years experience in teaching interior design at TAFE, as coordinator of the interior design department and in curriculum design and development. She is a passionate design educator known for her empathetic mentoring style and specialises in teaching design fundamentals and methodology, colour and drawing.

Currently, Linda also works in private practice as a colour consultant and as a freelance artist. She is working towards a painting exhibition and expanding her commission base to the interior design industry.

She has been a guest presenter at the Melbourne Home Show since 2017 and is a member of the DIA and the National Association for the Visual Arts.

Get to Know Linda

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into interior design?

I've always been creative and wanted to get into a creative field after finishing school. Having also considered doing a fine arts degree, I decided to accept to study interior design at one of the leading universities at the time. Studying ignited a passion for design. After graduating I worked in the high end commercial interior design sector.

What inspired you to become an interior design tutor?

My passion for interior design and design education.

What are some essential skills or qualities that every interior designer should possess?

Both creativity and practicality, people skills, be organized and have good attention to detail.

What are some favorite projects you have worked on?

A large commercial project: The Melbourne Casino Projects.

What is your teaching philosophy when it comes to interior design?

To mentor the student, in a sense to walk beside each student guiding them and at the same time pushing them to get the best out of them.

What are some key skills and knowledge areas you focus on in your courses?

Color studies, application of color in interior design, design skills and presentation skills, eg drawing, color rendering and 3D modeling - SketchUp

How would you describe your design style and where do you draw inspiration from?

Minimalist, pared back, Japanese design. I draw inspiration from the Australian Landscape.

Who are your biggest influences in the field of interior design?

Architects such as Tadao Ando and John Pawson.

What is your favorite part about being a tutor?

Enjoying the relationship forged between students and being able to help students.

What advice would you give to new students?

Be patient with yourself, explore your creativity, allow this area to grow. You can always learn skills however learning how to design - this is the priceless gift.

I chose to enroll with IDI because I wanted to grow my technical skills and confidence as an interior designer. This course gave a great overview of designing a large home renovation from start to finish.
