About Me

When I was a young teenager, my parents were updating my bedroom and they told me I could choose what I wanted on the walls. Little did they know that, rather than choosing an easy-going paint color, I would go for a dark navy wallpaper with a pattern of little reflective silver squares! After my dad got over the shock, he slogged through wallpaper paste and pattern repeats to help me achieve my creative vision. I still remember that feeling of having a hand in creating the way my space felt. It felt fantastic. It felt like "Me." A variety of experiences with the importance of creative expression has, in fact, directed my whole life's path. After 30 years as a theatre artist and professor, and designing spaces for myself, friends, and family on the side, Interior Design took center stage in my life, and I formed "The Inside Story by Marika Becz", a website/content hub/blog that explores different ways to make spaces come alive with purpose and meaning. (Oh, and I still love wallpaper.)

My Work

I'm drawn to and deeply inspired by what the natural world has to offer in the way of form, texture, and color. Spaces affect us very deeply, even if we're not entirely aware of it on a conscious level so, for me, the most important work I can do is to interpret how the client wants their space to FEEL, while marrying this to form, function, and budget. This can mean organic materials and earth tones in a minimalist Zen yoga studio space, or whimsical, vibrant colors and textures playing off each other in a child's play room, or a maximalist explosion of flowers and gauze-y textures at a wedding. I also believe in the magic of re-purposing materials and working sustainably whenever and wherever possible. We're all playing out a story on a beautiful planet that we need to take care of.
