For over a decade, Wendi has supported students on their interior design journey at The Interior Design Institute (IDI).
Before commencing her career in interior design, Wendi had a twenty-five-year career in theatre, working in costume and set design for both student and professional productions at the renowned Alexander Theatre at Monash University.
She collaborated with theatre producers such as Michael Edgley, Kevin Jacobson, and Cameron Macintosh, gaining a wealth of experience that took her around the world.
During her travels, Wendi developed a deep appreciation for architecture and interior design, which led her to educate herself in these fields.
After leaving show business, she transitioned into interior design, working with property developers on both commercial and residential projects.
Wendi is passionate about education and finds it rewarding to pass on her extensive knowledge to her students. As a tutor at IDI, she also runs her own interior design consultancy, focusing on kitchens, bathrooms, and colour schemes. She is a member of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and continues to consult on domestic projects.
My background was in theatre working in set and costume design.
IDI asked me to cover for a tutor on leave back in the early days and I stayed on and loved it. I'm now officially qualified to teach.
Creative and artistic skills along with technical skills in using drawing programs. Having a good sense of space and being able to visualise in 3D. As well as understanding and empathising with clients to meet their needs and desires.
My own Paddington terrace home.
By balancing creativity with technical expertise, critical thinking with practical application, and individual expression with collaborative skills.
My design style is best described as "Eclectic Elegance." Blending elements from various design periods and styles to create spaces that are rich in character and sophistication while maintaining a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic. It’s about balancing bold, diverse elements with subtle, classic touches.
Iain Halliday is one of my biggest influences.
Witnessing students' progress and development over time is incredibly rewarding. It's gratifying to see them gain confidence, improve their skills, and achieve their goals.
To approach their studies with an open mind and a willingness to explore new ideas and styles.

Discovering the Interior Design Institute was one of the best things that happened to me, because it taught me everything I needed to know to develop, not just my skills, but also to enhance my self-esteem.
