GOTYA 2025: How Two IDI Graduates Are Shaping the Future of Interior Design in Australia

When it comes to launching a successful career in interior design, few achievements stand out quite like a nomination for the Graduate of the Year Awards (GOTYA). Run by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA), this prestigious award shines a spotlight on the most talented and dedicated design graduates in the country—and this year, we’re proud to celebrate two IDI graduates: Zoe Lloyd, who has been nominated, and Amy Donehue, who has been awarded the Queensland winner in the “Place – Vocational” category!

In short…

  • Two IDI graduates—Zoe Lloyd and Amy Donehue—have achieved recognition in the 2025 Graduate of the Year Awards (GOTYA) by the Design Institute of Australia.
  • Amy has been awarded the Queensland winner in the “Place – Vocational” category—a huge achievement that reflects the strength of her portfolio, creativity, and professionalism.
  • Zoe’s nomination also highlights a commitment to industry standards and a deeply personal, purpose-driven design philosophy.

These recognitions are more than personal wins—they’re a powerful example of what’s possible when students invest in their professional development, craft exceptional portfolios, and embrace industry standards from day one.

At The Interior Design Institute, portfolio development isn’t an afterthought—it’s core to everything we do. From real-world briefs to 3D visualization and technical documentation, our students graduate ready to impress. GOTYA is proof of that.

“Being nominated for the Graduate of the Year Awards is both humbling and encouraging, and was completely unexpected. I chose to study interior design because it brings me joy and is where I find true flow and creativity. I believe the spaces we live in should feel beautiful and safe, and I am passionate about helping others create environments that reflect and support their identity. To do something that brings me joy and have it recognized in this way is an absolute honor. I am especially grateful for the support and guidance of Vicki Mullins throughout my learning journey.

A wide range of aesthetics inspired my design process. This is one of the things I love most about interior design; the creative possibilities are limitless. My submission included mid-century modern elements, featured in both my projects and my home, with Brillhart House as a source of inspiration. I also drew from British Colonial style, influenced by the elegance of Raffles Hotel in Singapore and Torel 1884 in Porto. Finally, the rich and glamorous aesthetic of Greg Natale shaped the luxurious office space I designed, incorporating layered textures, geometric forms, marble and metallic finishes.

Since graduating, I have worked with private clients on residential updates, value-driven redesigns and improvements in function. I am also combining my love of design with my teaching and mentoring roles to support students and those with diverse needs in exploring their creativity through interior design. This includes helping them build valuable life skills such as planning, budgeting, communication and time management through the process of designing meaningful spaces.”

Amy Donehue:

Amy brings a rich cultural heritage and a deep appreciation for family history to her work, shaped by her Australian and Trinidadian background. Her career spans years in the construction industry, with a strong focus on residential and commercial lighting, supported by early foundations in interior design.

Now officially announced as the 2025 Queensland winner in the “Place – Vocational” category at the Graduate of the Year Awards (GOTYA), Amy’s work has been recognized for its depth, innovation, and integrity. This outstanding achievement is a testament to her dedication and creative vision.

Driven by a passion for creating thoughtful, sustainable spaces, Amy is expanding her expertise through retraining in Building Design and working towards Green Star Accreditation. Her evolving skill set reflects a strong commitment to environmentally conscious design, functionality, and long-term impact.

"Being nominated was a truly humbling and unexpected. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my design style and skills resonated with others, and to have that recognition is so meaningful. I honestly wouldn’t be where I am now without the guidance of my tutor, Linda Bistricic, and the unwavering support from IDI. Their encouragement and knowledge gave me the foundation to push my creativity and technical skills further than I ever imagined. Having recently launched my interior design business after graduating, I have welcomed two new clients; I’m thrilled to start showcasing my work to the world.

My submission was shaped by a deep desire to blend technical expertise with meaningful storytelling. Having worked for many years in the lighting and construction sector, I gained invaluable insight into how people interact with their spaces—how trends rise, evolve, and either endure or fade. Witnessing these shifts inspired my commitment to creating designs that stand the test of time, both physically and stylistically. I’m drawn to using one-of-a-kind pieces, working with sustainable-focused material, and where possible, locally sourced products, especially ones that tell a story. This way, each project reflects a balance between nostalgia and contemporary design with a purpose, ensuring that the designed spaces feel personal, are functional and also enduring. These three things are what I make sure I uphold in every project I undertake, no matter if they were a part of my assignments or out in the real world.”

“Design isn’t just about space—it’s about people. By working with local makers, embracing sustainability, and crafting stories within each room, it ensures every design reflects both identity and has lasting value.”

These two inspiring graduates represent the next wave of Australian interior designers—equipped with skill, vision, and industry confidence.

Zoe’s nomination and Amy’s remarkable achievement as the Queensland Winner in the “Place – Vocational” category are a testament not only to their hard work and talent but to what’s possible when creativity meets commitment. At IDI, we’re beyond proud to see our graduates making waves on the national stage and shaping the future of design in meaningful, lasting ways.

Their success reminds us that great design doesn’t just change spaces—it changes lives. And this is only the beginning.
